Sonnet

[from Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Obras]

    Who leaves me miffed, I try to love;
who comes to love me, I leave miffed;
constantly I adore who scoffs my love;
I scoff who tries my love constantly:
    who I love is diamond;
& diamond am I to who loves me;
who kills me, I want to see win;
& who wants to see me win, I kill.
    If I pay, my ardor flags;
to beg shames my honor:
either way I’m sad;
    usually though, I choose,
who I don’t want, I use;
who doesn’t want me, I ruin.
